Georgia Tech community protests campus surveillance technology
Students, faculty, and community members gathered outside the Georgia Tech Police Department headquarters on October 29 to protest the use of Flock surveillance technology on campus. The rally, organized by Georgia Tech Students for a Democratic Society (GT SDS), targeted the implementation of automated license plate readers.
Protesters expressed concerns regarding the potential for technology abuse, citing its use by immigration authorities and its capacity to track individuals seeking reproductive healthcare. Organizers highlighted reports of technology misuse by various agencies across Georgia, noting at least 20 statewide arrests related to such issues.
While Police Chief Robert Connolly previously stated that Flock data access is restricted to Georgia police agencies within 50 miles of the campus, demonstrators argued these safeguards are insufficient. The group is calling for the removal of the cameras and plans to deliver formal demands to the university administration on November 6.
