Georgia therapy center owner indicted for Medicaid fraud

Desmond Maul, the 74-year-old owner of the outpatient mental health and chemical dependency provider Family 360, has been indicted by a Fulton County grand jury. The charges include Medicaid fraud and false writing.

According to Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, Maul allegedly continued to bill Medicaid for services as if they were provided or supervised by a licensed psychiatrist who passed away in 2021. The indictment claims Maul affixed the deceased physician’s name and signature to treatment notes for services occurring after the doctor's death. This activity allegedly allowed Maul to secure more than $88,000 in payments from Georgia’s Medicaid program between August 2021 and September 2023.

Carr stated that the state will aggressively investigate and prosecute those who take advantage of systems designed to assist vulnerable Georgians to protect taxpayer dollars.
