Georgia thunderstorms bring strong winds, lightning and heavy rain

A series of strong thunderstorms moved across Georgia on Thursday, prompting special weather statements for multiple counties in the state and parts of neighboring South Carolina. Wind gusts of 40‑55 mph, frequent lightning, heavy rain and occasional hail were reported, with the storms tracking over areas such as Lincoln, McDuffie, Columbia, Richmond, Wilkes, Taliaferro, Hancock, Warren, and the Augusta region. Interstates 20 and 520, as well as local roads, faced potential flooding and wind‑related hazards.

The National Weather Service warned that while the storms did not meet the threshold for severe thunderstorm warnings, they could still knock down tree limbs, cause street flooding in poorly drained areas, and pose a danger to boaters on Lake Strom Thurmond. Residents were advised to monitor radar, avoid outdoor activities during peak storm periods, and seek safe shelter from lightning and strong winds.
