Georgia wildfires spread smoke across state, impacting health and economy

Shifting winds are carrying smoke from wildfires in South Georgia into various parts of the state, including the metro Atlanta area. The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has issued warnings, urging residents to take precautions to protect their health as air quality declines.

Health officials note that smoke can irritate the eyes and respiratory systems of healthy individuals and exacerbate chronic conditions such as asthma, lung disease, and allergies. Vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and pregnant women, face increased risks of complications like heart attacks and strokes. Recommended precautions include limiting outdoor activities, keeping windows and doors closed, and using air purifiers.

Casey Wichman, an associate professor at Georgia Tech, explains that poor air quality can reduce local economic spending as people stay indoors, lower productivity, and increase healthcare costs. Research suggests that wildfire smoke is eroding decades of progress made in air quality improvements through environmental regulations.
