Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium installs winter turf for upcoming derby

The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium has completed the seasonal transition of its pitch, installing a natural winter turf ahead of the upcoming Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos derby in the Stoiximan Super League.

Every autumn, agronomists replace the heat-tolerant summer grass variety with a cold-tolerant mixture, typically consisting of Festuca arundinacea and Lolium perenne. This mixture is designed to withstand frost and reduced sunlight. To ensure durability, the stadium utilizes hybrid technology from SIS Pitches, which weaves natural grass with synthetic fibers (approximately 5-7%) to anchor the roots against heavy use and rain.

To maintain the pitch during low temperatures, the stadium employs mobile LED/sodium grow lights to provide artificial sunlight in shaded areas and a high-tech drainage system to prevent mud during heavy winter storms.
