Karaiskakis Stadium renovation enters public consultation phase
The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has released a multi-bill for public consultation that includes specific regulations for the modernization and expansion of the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. The proposed legislative framework, which will be open for consultation until October 24, aims to increase the stadium's capacity from approximately 33,500 to between 52,000 and 53,000 seats through new stands and a lightweight roof.
The project involves a significant private investment of at least 250 million euros, funded by Olympiacos FC and its president, Vangelis Marinakis. The redevelopment is designed to transform the venue into a modern multi-purpose facility capable of hosting both sporting and cultural events, potentially boosting economic activity in Piraeus.
Technical provisions in the bill include new height limits for the western side and the roof, a 60% coverage limit, and a requirement that at least 65% of the building coefficient be dedicated to purely athletic uses. The plan also includes the provision of at least 1,800 parking spaces and updated environmental terms.
