Geospatial Information Agency maps Sumatra flood hazards

The Indonesian Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) is developing flood hazard maps across Sumatra to strengthen disaster mitigation efforts. This initiative follows major flooding in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in November 2025.

BIG teams are currently deployed to affected areas to collect geospatial data, which will serve as the foundation for accelerating post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction. Antonius B. Widjanarto, Deputy for Thematic Geospatial Information at BIG, stated that consistent geospatial references are essential for ensuring that interventions are accurately targeted and accountable.

The mapping project aims to cover 52 regencies and cities across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra by 2028. Beyond documenting past flood zones, the agency will identify hazard characteristics, including potential inundation areas, affected land area, and water depth, while accounting for topographical conditions.
