Geospatial technology advances decision-making and healthcare navigation

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are evolving beyond simple map visualization to become critical tools for decision-making. By integrating diverse data sources and territorial variables, these systems allow organizations to analyze complex relationships between infrastructure, resources, and threats. The integration of Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) and natural language processing is further enabling executives to interpret spatial data more effectively for preventive and strategic purposes.

In Colombia, engineers from Universidad del Valle, Zoe Katherine Muñoz Acosta and Nicolás Mera Llanos, have developed a prototype GIS specifically designed to improve medical navigation for breast cancer patients. The system centralizes patient information, healthcare centers, and geospatial data in Cali to help medical staff coordinate care and reduce delays in treatment. This initiative received the Esri Young Scholars Award 2026 for using GIS technology to address real-world social and health challenges.
