Geothermal energy exploration expands in Münsterland and Bad Bentheim
Geothermal energy exploration is advancing in Germany through new seismic measurements and adjusted exploration permits. In the northern Münsterland and Lower Rhine regions, the Geological Service of NRW (GD NRW) will conduct seismic measurements in October and November. These surveys aim to identify suitable sandstone and limestone formations at depths of up to 4,000 meters to provide a foundation for municipal and industrial heating projects.
In Lower Saxony, the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) has reduced the exploration permit area for the Norddeutsche Erdwärmegewinnungsgesellschaft mbH near Bad Bentheim. The area has been downsized from approximately 215 square kilometers to 116 square kilometers, focusing on a central strip that contains the highest potential for geothermal resources deeper than 400 meters. The permit remains valid until June 2027, though actual drilling requires further operational approval and public participation processes.
