Geothermal energy identified as key to Germany's heating resilience

Experts and industry associations in Germany are emphasizing the long-term economic and strategic benefits of transitioning to renewable heating systems. The Bundesverband Geothermie (BVG) highlights geothermal energy as a key component for achieving energy policy independence and building a resilient heat supply, especially amidst global energy market uncertainties.

A study commissioned by the BVG suggests that geothermal heat pumps represent the most cost-effective heating option over the long term. This is supported by comparative analyses from energy consultants, who warn that while fossil fuel systems like gas or oil may have lower initial purchase prices, their total lifetime costs are significantly higher due to energy consumption and price volatility.

For example, a 20-year lifecycle calculation shows that an air heat pump with a 22,500 Euro upfront cost results in approximately 24,500 Euro in heating expenses. In contrast, a gas heating system is estimated to cost 70,000 Euro, and an oil heating system could reach 71,500 Euro over the same period.
