Gerald Guinn Rescued Alive After 24‑Hour Search in Grand Canyon

Gerald Guinn, an 83‑year‑old hiker from Kanab, Utah, went missing on July 21, 2026 while trekking on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. After he failed to return to his companion, the park’s emergency center activated a large‑scale rescue involving the National Park Service, Coconino County Search and Rescue, and Kane County Sheriff’s Office. Helicopters, drones, ground patrols and tracking dogs searched the remote area through the night.

A signal from Guinn’s mobile phone was detected, allowing rescuers to narrow the search. A helicopter overflight located him about 2.5 miles from his last known position on the afternoon of July 22. Guinn signaled with his hands and was lifted to safety, confirming he was alive after more than 24 hours lost in the rugged terrain.
