Brazil: Lula proposes new popular finance secretariat

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced his intention to create a secretariat dedicated to popular finances if re-elected. The proposal, shared during a live broadcast with digital influencer Nath Finanças and Deputy André Janones, aims to provide financial guidance to low-income workers, including self-employed individuals and artisans.

In addition to the proposed secretariat, the administration has introduced measures to support small businesses. This includes a new law increasing the annual revenue limit for Individual Microentrepreneurs (MEIs) from R$ 81,000 to R$ 140,000, alongside provisions for the remission of federal tax debts. Furthermore, the government is considering a project to forgive debts for companies in the events sector registered under the Simples tax regime, similar to previous relief provided to MEIs.

Regarding fiscal policy, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin has emphasized that economic adjustments should focus on reducing waste and privileges rather than implementing recessionary cuts that impact the poor. He argued that economic growth is a more effective way to improve the debt-to-GDP ratio than austerity measures that reduce purchasing power.
