Geran-4 jet drones enter Lviv airspace for the first time
Russian jet-powered Geran-4 drones have entered the airspace of Lviv in western Ukraine for the first time. On October 10, 2026, the Ukrainian Air Force issued warnings regarding a high-speed drone targeting the cities of Vynnyky and Lviv, as well as the local airport area. Lviv Mayor Andrii Sadovyi confirmed the drone's entry into the city, though Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted the aircraft near Lviv with no reported casualties or destruction.
The Geran-4 represents a significant technological evolution in Russian unmanned combat systems. According to details presented to Vladimir Putin, these drones feature jet engines, improved guidance systems, and specialized warheads. They are reported to have an operational range of 750–800 kilometers and speeds reaching approximately 350 kilometers per hour, though some technical estimates suggest even higher maximum speeds.
The deployment of these jet drones marks a strategic shift in the conflict, moving away from traditional propeller-driven models like the Shahed series. The increased speed and flight altitude of jet-powered UAVs allow them to penetrate heavily defended airspace more effectively, forcing Ukraine to strengthen air defenses hundreds of kilometers away from the front lines.
