Geran-5 UAVs bypass Ukrainian air defenses via high-altitude flight
Russia is deploying advanced Geran-4 and Geran-5 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that utilize jet engines, significantly altering aerial combat tactics in Ukraine. Unlike previous propeller-driven models like the Geran-2, which fly at low altitudes and are vulnerable to machine guns and mobile fire groups, these newer jet-powered drones are capable of cruising at altitudes between 5km and 7km.
This high-altitude flight strategy aims to bypass Ukraine's established low-altitude defense systems. Many effective anti-UAV tools, such as the Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, Skyranger 35, and various man-portable air-defense systems like the American Stinger or Polish Piorun, have effective ceilings significantly lower than 7km. Consequently, intercepting these high-flying targets requires more advanced missile defense systems or fighter aircraft.
The evolution of these drones represents a shift from the Geran-1 and Geran-2 models, which relied on massed, low-speed attacks to overwhelm defenses. While the older models were susceptible to helicopters and anti-aircraft artillery due to their slow speeds, the Geran-5's increased altitude and speed present a more complex challenge for Ukrainian air defense networks.
