Geranium care: How to restart summer flowering

To encourage continuous blooming in balcony geraniums (Pelargonium) during the summer, gardeners should practice proper deadheading rather than simply increasing water or fertilizer. When flowers fade, the plant often directs its energy toward seed production through the remaining flower stalks.

Instead of merely removing dried petals, the entire flower stalk (hampe) should be removed at the precise point where it joins the main stem. This process prevents the plant from exhausting its resources on useless parts and helps avoid mold issues like botrytis. The Royal Horticultural Society suggests cutting or cleanly breaking the stalk near its junction with the main stem to promote new buds.
