Gerardo Fernández Noroña challenges ruling on political violence

Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña has challenged a ruling by the Electoral Tribunal of the state of Michoacán, which ordered him to issue a public apology to the mayor of Uruapan, Grecia Quiroz.

The tribunal found that Noroña engaged in political violence against women in his communications with the mayor. Noroña, a member of the Morena party, has dismissed the decision as a “blow” and intends to appeal, arguing that the ruling ignores established criteria regarding parliamentary immunity.

He contends that his statements are protected by constitutional freedom of expression and legislative immunity, asserting that his status as a senator remains intact regardless of the platform used for his commentary.
