Gerardo Martino reflects on his tenure with Paraguay

Gerardo 'Tata' Martino has reflected on his tenure as the head coach of the Paraguay national football team, fifteen years after his cycle concluded. In an interview with Urbana Sports, the current Atlanta United manager reviewed the achievements and limitations of that period.

Martino highlighted major successes, including Paraguay's qualification for the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals and the 2011 Copa América runner-up finish. However, he expressed self-criticism regarding the team's ability to develop a more attractive style of play, stating, “We did not find or we did not have the players to make the leap in quality.”

He noted that while the squad possessed significant competitive strength and dedication, there was untapped potential for growth. Martino also took personal responsibility for the tactical evolution of the team, suggesting he may not have been the ideal coach to implement the specific footballing improvements required at that time.
