Gerardo Mérida Sánchez released from New York prison
Gerardo Mérida Sánchez, the former Secretary of Public Security for Sinaloa, was released from a federal detention center in Brooklyn on August 11. Mérida, a retired general with a background in military intelligence, had voluntarily surrendered to U.S. Marshals at the Arizona-Sonora border on May 11.
U.S. authorities have accused Mérida of being a key figure in protecting the Sinaloa Cartel, specifically the faction known as ‘Los Chapitos’. The allegations include conspiracy to import narcotics, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and providing government protection and intelligence to the criminal organization. It is alleged he received monthly payments of approximately $100,000 in exchange for leaking information regarding security operations.
Mérida has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His release from the federal prison registry follows the postponement of his scheduled court hearing. Reports suggest he may be negotiating a cooperation agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice to serve as an informant or witness.
