Boyko Borisov opposes GERB nominating a presidential candidate

Boyko Borisov, leader of the GERB party, has expressed opposition to the party nominating its own candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. He has set a deadline of September 8 for party members to reach a final decision on whether to field a candidate or not.

Borisov noted that an internal debate is currently underway within GERB. He argued that nominating a pro-European candidate might split the right-wing vote, which he described as 'the greatest service' to Iliyana Yotova, who is running via an initiative committee. He emphasized that GERB will not provide 'unsolicited support' to any other candidate.

While some GERB deputies have pushed for a formal nomination to counter left-leaning candidates, Borisov maintains that the party should focus on strengthening its structures ahead of local elections. He also criticized other political forces for hiding behind initiative committees rather than presenting official party candidates.
