GERB seeks non-partisan candidate for Bulgarian presidency

Kostadin Angelov, Deputy Chairperson of the GERB party, stated that no partisan candidate can serve as a unifier for the Bulgarian nation. In an interview with BNT, Angelov explained that the party has decided not to field its own presidential candidate pair, opting instead to seek a common, non-partisan candidate within the right-wing political space.

Angelov argued that the presidency should represent a figure above party politics to help heal a society that has been divided by political parties into “competing political advertisements.” He emphasized that GERB aims to prioritize state interests over party interests, citing the party's previous legislative cooperation as evidence of this approach.

The party will wait to see which candidates can fulfill the roles of unifier, commander-in-chief, and statesman capable of defining a clear geopolitical direction for Bulgaria. Angelov also noted that GERB will not provide preliminary instructions to its voters and warned that candidates attacking the party or its leader, Boyko Borisov, should not expect support.
