Bulgaria's political landscape is shifting ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for October 25, 2026. The GERB party has made the unprecedented decision not to nominate its own candidates, a move Boyko Borisov defended by stating that a pro-European GERB candidate might split the vote and inadvertently aid Iliana Yotova.

An initiative committee has been established in Sofia to nominate Iliana Yotova and Kiril Valchev for president and vice-president. The committee includes figures from science, culture, and sports, as well as politicians and journalists. However, controversy has emerged regarding the committee's composition, with reports alleging that at least 14 members have past affiliations with state security or intelligence services. Additionally, journalist Georgi Toshev denied being an official member of the Yotova-Valchev committee despite his name appearing on the initial list, leading to conflicting accounts between him and the campaign staff.

In contrast, Andrey Gyurov is emerging as a candidate supported by the 'Democratic Bulgaria' (DB) and 'We Continue the Change' (PP) formations. Supporters of Gyurov argue he offers a necessary corrective to the current administration and can protect democratic values. The upcoming election cycle is characterized by a competition between these different visions for Bulgaria's future leadership.
