Gerda Stryi-Leitgeb receives honorary grave status in Wiesbaden
The magistrate and elder council of Wiesbaden have designated the gravesite of painter Gerda Stryi‑Leitgeb on the Südfriedhof as an Ehrengrab (honorary grave) until February 2055. Mayor Gert‑Uwe Mende praised her as a significant 20th‑century artist who shaped the cultural life of the city as a painter, teacher and organizer.
Born in 1904 in Kattowitz, Stryi‑Leitgeb studied art in Breslau, faced Nazi persecution and the label of “degenerate art”, and after World War II settled in Wiesbaden in 1948. She co‑founded the local artists’ group “Künstlergruppe 50”, created public murals and contributed to the city’s artistic heritage for decades.
