Gerhard Schröder joins supervisory board of Russian Hyperglobus

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder has joined the supervisory board of Hyperglobus, a Russian supermarket operator that manages more than 20 stores under the Globus brand. Schröder, 82, was appointed by shareholders on September 30 and is expected to participate in general corporate management and lead the company’s strategic development within Russia.

Hyperglobus was spun off from the German Globus Holding in 2025 and operates as a legally and organizationally independent entity in Russia. The appointment comes amid a period of increased pressure from the Kremlin on Western businesses, following recent Russian decrees that placed the assets of several foreign companies, such as Metro, under temporary state management.

Hyperglobus shareholder Thomas Bruch stated that Schröder’s extensive experience in Russian politics, economy, and culture makes him an ideal addition to the board. Schröder has long maintained close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a relationship that has drawn significant criticism in Germany, particularly following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
