German Advice to Dispose Rose Leaves with Fungal Infection via Biotonne or Waste
German authorities advise that rose leaves affected by fungal diseases such as black spot, rose rust or powdery mildew should not be added to home compost. Because household compost piles rarely reach the 55‑70 °C needed to kill fungal spores, the recommended disposal routes are the organic waste bin (Biotonne) or regular waste, where high‑temperature treatment ensures spore destruction.
The Federal Environment Agency and the Bavarian State Office for the Environment emphasize collecting infected leaf litter in sealed bags and removing it promptly to prevent the spread of spores in spring. Using the Biotonne leverages municipal facilities that reliably achieve the required temperatures, while waste incineration eliminates spores completely, though it forgoes the return of organic material to the soil.
