German agent detained in Cyprus faces human rights allegations

Ewa Künzel, a 51-year-old real estate agent from Aschaffenburg, Germany, has been detained in Cyprus for 26 months without a verdict. She faces 46 counts of alleged illegal real estate transactions in northern Cyprus, including fraud, money laundering, and the misappropriation of property. If convicted, she faces up to 14 years in prison.

The case has become a diplomatic strain between Germany and the Republic of Cyprus. The German Foreign Office and the German Embassy in Nicosia are involved, with the embassy accusing Cypriot authorities of human rights violations. Legal experts have described the detention conditions as miserable, suggesting they contain ‘elements of torture.’

The legal dispute is rooted in the division of Cyprus following the 1974 Turkish invasion. While Greek Cypriots displaced from the north still hold property titles, authorities in the Turkish-controlled north have been issuing properties to developers and immigrants. The Republic of Cyprus has been actively taking legal action against such transactions.
