German agriculture ministers meet to discuss subsidies and labeling

As German agriculture ministers convene in Würzburg, several key issues facing the sector have emerged. The Badischer Landwirtschaftlicher Hauptverband (BLHV) is calling for long-term diesel relief to provide planning security for farms struggling with high costs and recent droughts.

Regarding consumer transparency, Brandenburg's Agriculture Minister Hanka Mittelstädt has expressed reservations about the planned 2027 national animal welfare labeling system. She argues the initiative should only proceed if it includes imported goods to ensure fair competition for regional farmers.

Other policy discussions include a joint initiative from Hamburg, Bremen, and Lower Saxony to improve the social and economic standing of women in agriculture, and appeals from nature conservation groups for reliable funding for rural development and biodiversity under upcoming EU agricultural policies.

Additionally, an EU stress test has confirmed the effectiveness of current nature conservation regulations, suggesting that fundamental reforms to European standards are not required, though implementation challenges remain in individual member states.
