German AI Events Spotlight Surface Technology and 3D Printing

The Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik (ZVO) convened its Oberflächentage conference on September 17 to examine how artificial intelligence can improve efficiency, sustainability, safety and quality in galvanic and surface‑technology processes. Presentations covered data‑quality challenges, employee acceptance, integration costs, and the use of AI to predict and prevent defects before coating. Other sessions explored AI‑driven knowledge capture to preserve expertise amid demographic change and demonstrated the potential of ChatGPT for training and knowledge transfer.

In July, the 42 Kaiserslautern venue hosted a series of free public workshops on 3D printing and artificial intelligence. The “KI in der Kiste” learning lab, organized with the Friedrich‑Alexander‑Universität Erlangen‑Nürnberg, offered hands‑on exploration of AI concepts such as machine reasoning, waste sorting and crime‑fighting. Additional events included a deep‑sea bioluminescence lecture, 3D‑printing tutorials for youths, and a café serving multicultural dishes.
