German airlines reduce kerosene consumption through fleet modernization
German airlines have reduced their specific kerosene consumption to 3.32 liters per passenger per 100 kilometers in 2024. This represents a nearly 47 percent decrease compared to 1990, when consumption stood at 6.3 liters.
According to the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry (BDL), these efficiency gains are driven by continuous fleet modernization, improved aerodynamics, and new engine generations rather than political mandates. Replacing older aircraft with latest-generation models can immediately reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent. Some modern long-haul aircraft are reported to consume as little as 2.1 to 2.5 liters per passenger per 100 kilometers.
Despite these advancements, the pace of fleet renewal faces challenges due to ongoing delivery delays from manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing. The German aviation industry currently operates a fleet of 848 aircraft and has ordered or earmarked 423 new aircraft by 2036, with an estimated list price of approximately 72 billion euros.
