German airports Stuttgart and Memmingen announce infrastructure and solar expansions

German airports Stuttgart and Memmingen are undertaking significant infrastructure and sustainability upgrades.

Stuttgart Airport plans to expand its solar power capacity by constructing a new 31,000 square meter photovoltaic system. This installation, expected to provide approximately three megawatts of power, will be built on green spaces west of the runway. The project includes an energy storage system to maximize self-consumption and is part of a broader climate strategy aiming for net greenhouse gas neutrality in ground operations by 2040. A second solar installation is planned for 2027, which would bring the airport's total solar capacity to roughly six megawatts.

Memmingen Airport is investing over ten million euros this year to expand its terminal and apron. Key improvements include the creation of additional gates in the upper floor to benefit non-Schengen passengers and reduce waiting times. The airport is also modernizing its arrival areas, installing new air conditioning powered by its own solar energy, and adding two new aircraft parking positions on the apron. These measures are intended to increase capacity and efficiency to support future growth.
