Stefan Grundei, the Managing Director of the Federal Association of Allotment Gardens in Germany (BKD), has called on the federal government to provide funding in the upcoming budget to preserve and expand allotment gardens. Grundei emphasized that these spaces are essential infrastructure for climate protection, biodiversity, and urban recreation, noting that their irrigation provides a significant cooling function for cities during heatwaves.

The BKD reports that Germany currently has approximately 1.2 million allotment garden plots, but demand significantly exceeds supply. In Berlin alone, there is a demand for 50,000 additional plots beyond the existing 64,000. This request comes after a previously planned federal funding program for allotment gardens was removed from the 2025 and 2026 budgets.

In response to the recent heatwave, the German cabinet is scheduled to discuss heat and climate protection. SPD parliamentary group manager Dirk Wiese has also indicated that the expansion of allotment gardens could be considered as a successful model for creating urban retreat spaces.
