German Ambassador calls for people-centered coastal protection in Ghana

German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshoeft, has advocated for a people-centered approach to addressing coastal erosion in the Volta Region. Speaking at a Climate Talks 2026 dialogue in Keta, Landshoeft emphasized that coastal protection must extend beyond physical barriers to safeguard the lives, homes, and livelihoods of affected residents.

During the event, hosted by the German Embassy under the theme “Coastal Erosion and Its Impact on Human Security,” participants discussed how rising sea levels and flooding threaten food security, disrupt essential services, and increase the risk of displacement. Landshoeft noted that protecting human dignity and livelihoods is vital for maintaining regional peace and stability.

The dialogue included representatives from the Environmental Protection Authority, the National Disaster Management Organisation, traditional leaders, security personnel, and academic experts. The group examined the connection between coastal degradation and community security, calling for coordinated, locally appropriate interventions to bolster resilience.
