German and Austrian Catholic leaders address Church reforms

Bishop Georg Bätzing, former President of the German Bishops’ Conference, has criticized Pope Leo XIV’s characterization of the Catholic Church’s clerical abuse crisis. In a diocesan statement, Bätzing argued that the abuse is systemic rather than merely a human problem. He identified clericalism, asymmetrical power dynamics, and a “taboo-ridden” approach to the sexual orientation of priests as structural factors that have facilitated abuse and hindered its detection.

In Austria, Archbishop Josef Grünwidl of Vienna expressed support for the ordination of women, though he noted that such a change would require a decision from the universal Church via a council. Grünwidl also argued for the abolition of mandatory priestly celibacy, stating it is not tied to the truths of the faith or dogma. Additionally, the Austrian bishops plan to revise statutes to allow laypeople to be elected secretary general of the Bishops’ Conference, pending Vatican approval.
