German and Austrian health insurers launch AI tools for cancer risk prediction and claim processing
In Germany, the Medical University Hannover’s Institute for Epidemiology, Social Medicine and Health System Research is leading the ROKAVI project, which develops AI algorithms that analyse routine health‑insurance data to predict individual cancer risks. The initiative, prompted by the 2024 Health Data Utilisation Act, involves partners such as ITSC GmbH and the insurers Pronova BKK and mkk‑meine Krankenkasse. Project leader Prof. Dr. Christian Krauth says the models aim to improve early detection, patient counselling and overall system costs.
In Austria, the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) is rolling out an AI system called KAI to automate the processing of reimbursement claims submitted via its app and website. General Director Bernhard Wurzer notes that the system already handles routine tasks for over 85 million submitted pages, offering real‑time status tracking for users of the “Meine ÖGK‑App”, which has been downloaded more than one million times and sees 200 000 active monthly users.
