German animal welfare groups prepare for rising winter costs

Animal welfare organizations in Germany are preparing for the upcoming winter season as operational costs are expected to rise. In Merseburg, volunteers at the Tierschutzverein Merseburg are preparing shelters for approximately 20 dogs, including providing fresh straw and preparing heated accommodations for periods of heavy frost.

The association reports that monthly costs for operations and veterinary services increase significantly during the colder months, rising from approximately 6,000 euros in the summer to about 10,000 euros in the winter. These activities are funded exclusively through donations, though volunteers have noted a decline in the willingness of people to donate.
