German apprentices report higher rates of workplace violence than students

A new Forsa survey commissioned by the German Statutory Accident Insurance reveals that apprentices experience significantly higher rates of workplace violence and aggression compared to university students.

According to the data, 42 percent of apprentices have experienced or observed insults and verbal abuse, whereas the figure for students is 23 percent. Bullying and social exclusion are reported by 28 percent of apprentices, compared to 12 percent of students. Physical violence or assaults were observed or experienced by 14 percent of apprentices, while only 3 percent of students reported similar incidents.

Despite these higher conflict rates, apprentices receive more extensive training in occupational safety. Approximately 91 percent of apprentices have been instructed in accident prevention and health protection, compared to 53 percent of students. Consequently, 72 percent of apprentices feel well or very well prepared for a safe professional life, while only 40 percent of university students report the same level of preparedness.
