German apprenticeship satisfaction high but access remains difficult

A new representative study, "Ausbildungsperspektiven 2026", finds that 90 % of apprentices in Germany are satisfied with their training and 87 % would choose the same occupation again. The majority rate their work environment positively: 86 % say team atmosphere is good, 85 % learn new things regularly, 83 % find tasks meaningful and 79 % enjoy their work.

Despite the strong overall image, the study highlights persistent access problems. In 2025, about 84 000 applicants failed to secure a training place, a rise of more than 19 % year‑on‑year, while 54 400 apprenticeship vacancies remained unfilled, 22 % fewer than in 2024. Young people with lower secondary education express particular doubt about their chances. Expert Fabian Schaffer notes that a solid apprenticeship system remains a crucial foundation for career prospects, especially in economically uncertain times.
