Germany vocational training demand rises amid high salaries

A shifting German labor market is seeing a surge in demand for vocational training, with high salaries and job security in technical and care sectors. An analysis by Stepstone, cross-referenced with data from the Federal Employment Agency, reveals that chemical workers lead the ranking with an average starting annual salary of 53,250 euros. Other high-earning apprenticeships include surgical technology assistants (51,250 euros) and geriatric nursing specialists (51,000 euros).

Despite the national trend of labor shortages, some companies are seeing record growth in trainees. The Sukigroup in Landscheid reported a record 14 new apprentices starting this August, significantly higher than their previous annual average of three to five.

Conversely, regional shortages persist in other areas. In the Hochsauerlandkreis, the food, hospitality, and bakery industries still have 783 unfilled apprenticeship positions. The NGG union is advising young people to utilize flexible start dates in September or October to secure these roles.
