German architect and politician dies in South Tyrol fall

Fritz Weinberger, a 72-year-old architect and former SPD city council member from Schongau, Bavaria, died following a mountain accident in the Schnalstal valley of South Tyrol.

On the afternoon of October 15, Weinberger was hiking with a companion toward the Kirchbachspitze peak. During the descent, approximately 200 meters below the summit, Weinberger fell more than 100 meters in a difficult passage. The cause of the fall remains unknown. Although his companion immediately alerted emergency services, including the Pelikan 3 rescue helicopter, emergency responders could only confirm his death at the scene.

Weinberger was a prominent figure in his home region, having served on the Schongau city council from 1984 to 2002 and receiving the city's honorary ring. His architectural work included projects such as the RTL broadcasting center in Munich, the Fendt exhibition hall in Marktoberdorf, and various renovations in the Weilheim-Schongau district.
