Wuppertal synagogue arson: Suspect arrested after attack
A 37-year-old man of Afghan nationality has been arrested following an arson attack on the Bergische Synagogue in Wuppertal, Germany. The incident occurred on a Thursday afternoon at a side entrance of the building.
According to police reports, the suspect allegedly spread flammable liquid on the steps of a side entrance and ignited it. The fire was quickly extinguished by synagogue staff, resulting in minimal material damage and no reported injuries.
Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, condemned the act as an antisemitic attack, noting that it took place during the period of major Jewish holidays, just days before Yom Kippur. Schuster highlighted a pattern of targeting religious holidays to spread fear and noted that the incident occurred in broad daylight.
Authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia have launched an investigation. Data from the organization RIAS indicates that 1,102 antisemitic incidents were recorded in the state during 2025.
