German authorities dismiss foil wrapping for passports
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has addressed online claims suggesting that wrapping passports in aluminum foil is necessary to prevent unauthorized data theft via the document's embedded chip.
According to the BSI, such precautions are unnecessary for German passports and ID cards. The agency highlighted that security protocols, specifically Password Authenticated Connection Establishment (PACE) and the older Basic Access Control (BAC), are designed to prevent chips from being read without direct, intentional access. These mechanisms ensure that documents cannot be scanned remotely through items like clothing pockets.
While aluminum foil can theoretically shield electromagnetic signals, experts suggest that for those seeking additional peace of mind, dedicated RFID-protective sleeves are a more practical and efficient alternative than kitchen foil.
