German authorities investigate suspected Islamist terror plot
German federal prosecutors are reviewing whether to take over an investigation into three men suspected of planning an Islamist terror attack. The suspects were detained by special forces in Hagen and Unna on October 1.
North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul stated that authorities believe a more serious incident was prevented through their intervention. While the attack was not considered imminent, officials noted that the plans could have been realized in terms of time and location.
Of the three men detained, two Syrian nationals from Hagen were released by a court, while a 23-year-old German man from Unna remains in custody. Investigators are examining potential charges related to the formation of a terrorist organization and incitement to commit a crime.
