German automotive sector confronts tighter cybersecurity rules and looming AI‑driven chip shortage

German vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers are facing a wave of new cybersecurity regulations as cars become increasingly computerised. The VDA has issued updated audit requirements, including remote inspections, and new standards for artificial‑intelligence use in production and quality tools. Suppliers must continuously update knowledge to meet these stricter compliance demands.

At the same time, the industry anticipates another chip crisis driven by AI’s high memory needs. Companies such as Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix have already secured their full 2026 high‑bandwidth memory capacity, while automakers are signing long‑term deals with firms like Qualcomm and Hyundai Mobis to guarantee access to advanced memory solutions. This shift could tighten supply of other memory types and raise prices, threatening vehicle production schedules.
