German aviation and tourism report mixed summer performance

German aviation and tourism sectors show mixed results for the summer season. Hamburg Airport reported over 2.3 million passengers during the summer holidays, a figure comparable to the 2.2 million recorded during the same period last year. The busiest single day at the terminal was July 24, with approximately 55,000 passengers. Despite stable numbers, the industry faces challenges due to high state location costs and aviation taxes, which have led some airlines to reduce capacity at secondary hubs like Hamburg.

At Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), July 2026 saw 2.46 million passengers, an increase of 95,000 compared to the previous year. However, overall figures for the first half of the year remained slightly below previous levels. Nationally, German airports saw 97.67 million passengers from January to June, a 0.8 percent decrease compared to the prior year.

In the tourism sector, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has seen growth, with 2.67 million guest arrivals and 9.57 million overnight stays in the first five months of the year, representing increases of 5.9 percent and 2.8 percent respectively. While Berlin serves as a major transit hub, the coastal regions of the east are showing stronger signs of recovery in holiday destinations.
