Germany public transport: Local passenger numbers rise 2%

In the first half of 2026, passenger numbers in Germany's local public transport (ÖPNV) rose by approximately 2% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 5.7 billion passengers. This growth includes a 1% increase in rail passengers and a 2% increase in bus users.

In contrast, long-distance travel saw a decline of 2%, dropping to 75 million passengers. Specifically, long-distance rail travel decreased by 3%, which officials suggest may be due to weather-related disruptions in the first quarter of the year. However, long-distance bus travel experienced a notable 10% increase, serving as a popular alternative.

Analysts suggest the continued growth in local transport is linked to the Deutschlandticket, which provides nationwide regional and local travel for a monthly fee. While the ticket has helped lower barriers for commuters and occasional users, experts note that regional differences in service density and capacity continue to influence how much different areas benefit from the tariff.
