German Basketball Talent Migration to U.S. Colleges Affects Ulm and Pro A

Investor and NBA player Isaiah Hartenstein, who holds a stake in Germany's Ratiopharm Ulm, says the recent flow of German and European players to U.S. colleges—driven by lucrative NIL contracts—has not harmed Ulm’s long‑term plans. Four European prospects (Alec Anigabta, Joel Cwik, Diego Garavaglia and Endurance Aiyamenkhue) chose the NCAA route this summer, earning salaries comparable to NBA levels, but none have yet reached the NBA. Hartenstein argues that players aiming for the NBA should still develop in Europe, where they face higher‑level competition and can later move to the NBA on stronger footing.

Former German‑born forward Roland Nyama, who spent four years at Stony Brook University and appeared in the 2016 NCAA tournament, returned to Germany in 2017. He played nine seasons across several Pro A clubs before retiring at age 32. Nyama’s career illustrates the personal and professional pathways opened by the NCAA experience, even as many players ultimately continue their careers in the German leagues.
