The Kulturufer Open Air 2026 program includes the documentary “On the Wave,” which follows German big‑wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner from his childhood away from the sea to the world’s most dangerous surf spots. The film tracks his journey through Germany, Hawaii and Portugal’s Nazaré, where he tackles some of the planet’s largest waves, confronting physical and mental limits.

Directed by Peter Wolf and Axel Gerdau, the 120‑minute, FSK‑6‑rated documentary blends archival footage, intimate interviews and spectacular ocean scenes to portray Steudtner’s relentless pursuit of his dream. The screening is part of the open‑air cinema series at the Kulturufer venue in Germany and will be shown to the public in 2026.
