German Bike Lock Tests Identify Most Secure Models for 2026
A recent consumer‑technology test in Germany evaluated 16 bicycle locks—including folding, U‑lock, and chain types—under extreme conditions such as cutting, grinding, water exposure, freezing and prolonged brute‑force attacks. To pass, a lock had to resist tampering for at least three minutes. The testing, carried out by the German tech magazine CHIP, found that organized theft of high‑value e‑bikes remains a concern, prompting the need for robust security.
The top‑performing models were the Kryptonite New York Lock Diamond Standard, the Hiplok Switch, the Hiplok DX 1000, the Abus Super Extreme Granite 2500, the Trelock Fold‑it Daily 130, the Abus Bordo SmartX 6500 and the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit chain. These locks demonstrated the highest resistance to cutting tools and picking, while also offering features such as LED keypads, fingerprint sensors, GPS tracking and alarm systems. The report recommends these models for owners of expensive road bikes and e‑bikes seeking the strongest protection against professional bike‑theft gangs.
