German Bishops' Conference restructures and appoints new commission leaders

The German Bishops' Conference (DBK) has restructured its organizational framework, reducing the number of commissions from 14 to eight. This reorganization involves the appointment of new leadership for the consolidated bodies.

Key appointments include Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck of Essen, who will lead the Commission for Faith and Science, and Bishop Stephan Ackermann of Trier, who moves to lead the Commission for Liturgy and Culture. Bishop Peter Kohlgraf of Mainz remains the head of the Commission for Missionary Pastoral Care and Church Services.

Other leadership changes include Archbishop Stefan Heße of Hamburg heading the Commission for Family, Youth, and Education, and Bishop Klaus Krämer of Rottenburg-Stuttgart leading the Commission for the Universal Church and Migration. Former DBK Chairman Georg Bätzing will chair the Commission for Media, while Cardinal Reinhard Marx previously oversaw the journalistic commission. Archbishop Udo Bentz will lead the Commission for Social and Charitable Issues, and Bishop Bertram Meier will lead the Commission for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue.
