German Book Prize 2026 longlist announced with 20 novel nominations
The jury for the 2026 German Book Prize has announced its 20-title longlist, selected from 205 submissions. The nominations include a diverse range of themes such as identity, migration, and historical exploration, with many works focusing on family histories and East German experiences.
Notable nominees include Austrian author Elias Hirschl for ‘Schleifen’, Shida Bazyar for ‘Die Lücken’, and Heinz Strunk for ‘Memories of Heidelberg’. The jury, led by spokesperson Cornelia Geißler, described the selection as a ‘mirror of our time’ that seeks to ‘examine the past to understand the present.’
The shortlist of six titles will be revealed on September 8, and the winner will be announced on October 5 during the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The prize for the winner is 25,000 euros, with 2,500 euros awarded to each of the other shortlisted authors.
