German Brigade Deployment in Lithuania Faces Recruitment Shortfall

Germany plans to station a full brigade of about 5,000 soldiers in Lithuania by the end of 2027 to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. Currently roughly 1,800 German troops are present, and recruitment for the remaining positions has proved difficult. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned that “not all 4,800 soldiers can be recruited voluntarily” and said the government may have to assign soldiers to the deployment if enough volunteers do not materialise.

Lithuanian defence officials note that infrastructure work is ahead of schedule, allowing the brigade to arrive earlier than originally planned. German troops are already conducting exercises near the Belarusian border, a move described by experts as a deterrent signal and a boost to the collective defence capability of NATO in the region.
